Numerous differences in the Discovery from _2001A Space Odyssey (1968)_ (qv), as director 'Stanley Kubrick (I)' (qv) deliberately had the models and sets destroyed.

Also in _2001A Space Odyssey (1968)_ (qv), HAL has flat display screens (note the pod bay interface); they are shown here as CRTs.

As the Leonov brakes around the dark side of Jupiter, the cable run used to pull the fireball past the camera is visible.

Also, bits of flame can be seen to drop off the fireball as though pulled straight down to the bottom of the frame, when no such thing would happen.

As Chandra is reactivating HAL, he pushes all but eight bricks in.

HAL's voice goes out of control, and Chandra spins around to reset it.

When he turns back, there are only four bricks left out of their slots.

As Dr.

Chandra escapes from Discovery before the emergency burn at the end of the film, Discovery's windows are totally covered in red sulfur dust, though earlier and subsequent scenes show the windows as having been cleared off.

At the beginning of the film, the graphics showing Dr.

Floyd's report of the events in 2001 indicate that the TMA-1 monolith was discovered in the Sea of Tranquility.

TMA-1 stood for Tycho Magnetic Anomaly-1 because the monolith was discovered in the crater Tycho.

Tycho is several hundred miles southwest of the Sea of Tranquility.

When Dr.

Floyd is talking with Millson outside the White House, his legs are alternately crossed/uncrossed between shots.

The AE35 high-gain antenna would not be used for short distance ship-to-ship communications, and thus the antenna would not have to be "turned away" from the Leonov since it would have remained pointed at Earth.

Short distance communications would be accomplished with other 2-way radios.

This was demonstrated in "2001" when Dave retrieved the body of Poole, all the while talking to Hal, without moving the AE35 antenna.

It is stated in the movie that the monolith has dimensions 1-4-9.

It's width to height ratio is indeed 4 to 9.

However, the thickness is far less than one fourth of the width.

When Curnow and Max enter the Discovery for the first time, the walls next to the pod bay doors are bare.

Later on, the walls have several signs warning that the pod bay must be vented before the doors can open.

In an HDTV transfer shown on HDNET, numerous traveling mattes and suspension line erasures were plainly visible and many dark fields in space scenes were boiling with compression artifacts.

If you fail to hear the Russian word for "four" in the countdown spoken by Tanya Kirbuk (Helen Mirren), the reason is that the word was deleted in versions later than the theatrical release and the early VHS versions because of Mirren's mispronunciation of "chih-TEE-reh" as "chee-TYE-ree".

Near the end of '2001' when Dave is disconnecting HAL, the video comes on inside HAL with Dr Floyd explaining that only HAL knew about the monolith on the moon.

Yet in this film, Dr Floyd (Roy Scheider) himself denies having done that, or even knowing about it.

Dave Bowman doesn't say "My God, it's full of stars!" in the film version of 2001, but he does say it in the book.

As Floyd (Roy Scheider) and Kirbuk (Helen Mirren) have their first conversation, Kirbuk is initially standing with her arms behind her back.

As the camera angle changes to face her, her arms are crossed in front of her.

A wire is clearly visible on the probe released by the Alexei Leonov.

No pods should be in the pod bay in 2010.

The original film showed 3 pods.

All were lost.

The first was lost with Poole's body.

The second was lost when Bowman blew the exploding bolts to enter the airlock.

The third transported Bowman into the worm hole/monolith.

When the crew enters the pod bay in 2010, one pod is is still sitting in it's storage area.

(Although ignored in the movie, this is explained in the book (section4, chapter 24).

Dave Bowman is supposed to have retrieved pod #3 on remote while preparing his departure.

) The idea of Jupiter achieving stellar fission at the end of the film is improbable as Jupiter does not have nearly enough mass to do so, and Jupiter going nova would destroy Europa which orbits at a distance of two million kilometers.

However, Jupiter going nova was not a natural occurrence as it was transformed by the monolith aliens who no doubt had the ability to control its size, gravity and output when they turned it into a mini sun with the intent of allowing life to evolve on Europa.

When Floyd is talking with Milson outside the White House, in the first close-up Floyd is wearing a tie.

After the long shot, in subsequent close-ups, Floyd's tie is gone.

However during the long shot, Floyd is seen removing his tie.

Floyd refers to the monolith being discovered on the moon nine years before, and to the failure of the original Jupiter mission, also nine years before.

These cannot both be true.

In the first film, after the monolith is found on the moon, and the Jupiter monolith is discovered due to its radio interference, the film jumps ahead and we are told that the Jupiter mission is taking place 18 months after that.

Near the end of the film, Dave asks HAL to point the AE35 antenna towards earth.

HAL tells him that this will prevent him from communicating with the Leonov.

The external shot which follows shows the AE35 moving, yet it starts off pointing downwards, not towards the Leonov.

However, the AE35 is intended for long range communication, and would be needed once the Leonov moved away into trajectory toward Earth.

That trajectory would be a long curve away from Jupiter, to meet Earth in a later part of its orbit.

So the antenna would be able to transmit toward either, but not both.

Earth would have better instruments than Leonov, for monitoring events.

When the Leonov crew are attempting to board Discovery, we see that the planet and the moon are being lit from different directions.

As they are both being lit by the sun, they should be lit from the same direction.

During the lunch in the Floyd's house, his wife Caroline is talking with him about a conference.

At the beginning Floyd appears bowed and with the left hand under his chin, but when the camera changes and makes a front face on him, Floyd isn't bowed and his left hand is over his lips.

"A new time, a new odyssey, a new chance to confront the enigmas arising from the daring Jupiter mission of the year 2001. Crew members aboard the Leonov are on course to rendezvous with the still orbiting Discovery.

Peter Hyams is a director that I both hate and love. He is a superb cinematographer, an OK director, but a horrible screenwriter.

I am shocked that they made a sequel to 2001. 2001: A Space Odyssey is my favorite movie of all time and in my opinion, the best movie of all time.

The fundamental problem I have with the movie is that it should not have produced but the fact that some film-makers in search of easy money try to piggy-bag on a big success is not surprising to me. What amazes me is that A C Clarke, the creator of the original story, was behind this thing and wrote the book that gave birth to this movie.

This movie is overrated. 6.

A sequel to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, though not directed by Kubrick. A US-Russian expedition is sent to Jupiter to see what happened to USS Discovery.

It may not match up to the original, but on its own it makes an entertaining space journey.

The main failure of this film is that it fails to go from the build up to that "something wonderful", to some kind of stasis or moment that make you really believe that something has changed and governments would change from the war path they were headed towards.by showing so directly the "mystery" (therefore making it no mystery at all) the sense of wonder goes out of the window and what should have been a decent climax for the film collapses.

Who are we and what are we, where have we come from and where are we going what is the sole purpose for our existence a mystery which cannot be unfolded by you or me an answer which cannot be given by human minds it is an answer beyond the intelligence of this galaxy. An endless space or is it an endless circle of emptiness where God threw us to find the answer on our own.
