Oliver ('Ewan McGregor' (qv)) goes to a fancy party as Austrian psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, but his accent is more Bavarian than Austrian.

When Oliver Fields is next to Hal Fields in his hospital bed, what appears to be Hal's glasses can be seen, but when Andy enters the room the glasses disappear.

On Hal Fields' death certificate, it says "Date of death09/17/04".

We know from the movie that he's already passed away in 2003.

My wife dragged me to the movies on Saturday. Normally I'm happy to go but I'm not particularly interested in homosexual movies.

The acting in the film is fine. All great actors, no problems there.

Beginners is one of those films that blows away any preconceived notions you may have formed from the synopsis and trailer, being full of heart and emotions in its unconventional storytelling techniques that just draws you into the film and its characters. For writer director Mike Mills, the premise is based on his own parents, where with the passing of his mom came the revelation by his dad who had decided to come out of the closet.

I normally give indie cinema a chance. But this one truly takes the biscuit as the worst indie film I've ever seen.

It's 2003. Thirty-eight year old graphic artist Oliver Fields (Ewan McGregor) has just lost his father Hal Fields (Christopher Plummer) to cancer, after Oliver's mother Georgia Fields passed away five years earlier.

Like others i was annoyed with the way the trailer was cut for this movie which makes it look like a great comedy/drama about a family coming to terms with a fathers decision to come out after 43 years of marriage. It is though a tear jerker that I didn't want to see or appreciate having to pay for especially as the subject matter (cancer) is a bit too close to home for me.

The first fifteen or so minutes of Beginners was full of such sweet promise that I couldn't wait to tuck into the rest of the movie. Ewan McGregor and Melanie Laurent have beautiful chemistry and the performances are even more beautiful because Melanie Laurent's character has laryngitis and she communicates only with her eyes, smile and notepad.

This film is a character study of Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer's characters as they re-evaluate their lives. The comparison to Woody Allen is apt - it is a slow and deep exploration of character.

Oliver Fields (Ewan McGregor) is depressed after the death of his father Hal (Christopher Plummer). He meets a fascinating lovely woman Anna (Mélanie Laurent) and falls head over heels.
