The beautiful scenery can't make up for the horrible editing and the even worse narrating. This movie could have been so much more, but apparently Werner Herzog has no clue whatsoever on how to achieve anything that goes beyond a nice sunset.

This documentary delves deep into the thoughts and reasons of people living and working in Antarctica. Profound views about life.

The landscapes and residents of Antartica speak for themselves, eloquently. If only we'd been given more of them, instead of the insipid philosophizing of the director.

Werner Herzog travels to Antarctica to film a colony of scientists going about their work with seals, penguins, volcanoes and the breathtaking sea life of this lesser known part of the world. This film is not the warning about global warming that you might expect, though the topic of global warming and man's future on this planet does come up.

Well, as someone who spent seasons at McMurdo and at the South Pole I can say Herzog got some things right. There really is trouble when Frosty Boy goes down, and the sky is amazing in its own right down on the Ice.

Encounters at the End of the World (2008) **** "There is no point that is south of the south pole." That's a no brainer, but have you ever thought about that before reading that statement?

To begin with, it is my belief that this is one of the few documentaries that not only presents you information but is there to teach you something without you even noticing the whole process of scientific explanations being delivered and philosophical ideas being expounded. It is interesting how naturally the documentary combines the 'place' with the 'people' even if in the first place it didn't seem natural to find such people in such a place.

Encounters at the End of the World is a nature documentary made by renowned director Werner Herzog. Herzog is a famously eccentric filmmaker with a long track record of notable movies and documentaries, often dealing with intense characters dealing with powerful forces, either natural or man-made.
