This film is as powerful as it gets. It's hard to believe how many topics are encapsulated by this documentary poverty, family, childhood, adolescence, broken homes, crime, addiction, economics, race, dreams, hope, disappointment, failure, despair ....

The documentary Hoop Dreams follows the journey of two young boys who aspire to make a career in basketball. The structure of the film is significant in getting the strong message across to the viewer.

I wonder what's become of Arthur Agee and William Gates? This documentary had appealed to me so much because in 1994 I was a senior in high school who loved basketball.

After watching the film, my overall reaction was that the film was so inspiring and heartfelt because the two boys, Arthur, and William endoured so many obstacles and hardships that many other people their age might not ever experience in a lifetime. These mental, social, physical, and racial obstacles made them who they are today.

I strongly believe that the documentary, Hoop Dreams, was very effective in showing its point, while following the lives of two high school basketball players. It was excellent due to the great interviews, and effective cross cutting between both stories.

As a documentary this works quite fine. Watching it alongside "The Last Dance" might also be a fine idea for a double bill.

This was a well made documentary different from most sports documentary with these two youngsters being the main stars who want to make it to the NBA.The music and editing of the footages were well done considering the time it came out in, everything felt smooth and the transitions between each year of high school was well done.

It runs for three hours but it feels much less, such is the power that this documentary holds. Absorbing, you get sucked in and the film has this grip on you.

One of the greatest sports movies ever and not even nominated for a single Oscar(with the exception of Film Editing, big deal). Just a great documentary feature made in 1994.
