Jim Carrey might once have shown promise as a serious and versatile actor, but on the evidence of his performance in "I Love You Phillip Morris," it would seem that the time in which he might have put that promise to use has passed.Carrey can't play any character as a real person, instead falling back on his usual bag of grotesque, exaggerated schtick.

This is not exactly your typical romance neither is it exactly your typical Jim Carrey movie. Here, Carrey plays Steven Russell.

Jim Carrey stars as Steven Russel, a hetero cop, married man, and church pianist who is secretely gay and decides to come out of the closet after an accident. Leaving his wife and daughter, he starts out a new life as a gay man but coming to the conculsion that being gay is expensive, so he decides to commit insurance fraud to pay the lifestyle.

Jim Carrey is a talented actor who played funny characters with vigour as if he is jumping out of the screen such as "The Trueman Show (1998)", "The Cable Guy (1996)" and "Yes Man (2008)", while he also portrayed an ordinary guy who suffered the pain of love that everyone would experience one or more in their life, in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)". This time, the story is a love story based on a true story, which describes a genius corn man who has an IQ of 169, and became gay after he experienced an accident.

Steven Russell is happily married to Debbie, and a member of the local police force when a car accident provokes a dramatic reassessment of his life. Steven becomes open about his homosexuality and decides to live life to the fullest - even if it means breaking the law.

Now, while most comedies are pretty bland, as direction goes: I was actually really surprised and I REALLY appreciated the fact that the filmmakers genuinely put effort and creativity into making this. The film got quite a few laughs out of me from it's cinematography and editing.

Jim Carrey manages to surprise me every time with the depth of his acting and his unique ability to emote in a funny yet real way. He got me again with I Love You Phillip Morris for sure.

One word: AMAZING. A tear jerking film that was totally worth watching, I saw it once but wasn't watching it seriously so I had to watch it again (cried both times though!

What a good movie that I don't recall seeing trailers for. Jim Carrey does an amazing job in this TRUE STORY.
