Akira Kurosawa, arguably the greatest Japanese director of all time, introduced himself to Western audiences in a big way with this brilliant, yet tantalizing story about a horrible murder that occurred in the woods and accounted by a woodcutter, a bandit, a woman, and a dead samurai. Unfortunately, there is no real way to know what really happened since all the stories are different and impossible to piece together.

Rashomon, a movie which can be categorized under the term "Movie ahead of its time". Few movie can only be categorized in such a way and only very few movies in that category entertains us, Rashomon is one among the very few movies which can be derived from the list of few movies.

Rashomon (1950) : Brief Review -Open your notebook of Methodic Filmmaking and put Rashomon on The Very First Page. What did i just see?

Path breaking cinema if you may permit me to call considering the fact that it was made in 1950. Very creative of Mr.

Unlike other old movies (like Casablanca, Frankenstein, It's a Wonderful life and so forth), this one didn't age well. To put it short: most scenes are way too long and the acting isn't very good.

What's truth? Is truth unchanging law?

I finally got a chance to see this and now can know what the "rashomon" technique is first hand. I feel parts of it went over my head, but I am struck by how vivid the cinematography was, even in black and white.

I first read this when I was a high school student in Japanese class.I was not able to understand the story at the first but through the class I realized the serious meaning and message from Ryunosuke Akutagawa.
