Hypnosis noir (or spiritualist noir) arrives at the heart of noir staged image, desire amplified at the hands of some illusionist, belief creating a story. The silent Dr.

I am not a fan of Turhan Bey but he did do a nice job in this thriller as a con man spiritualist. It was interesting to see how such smooth operators were able to win over their unfortunate victims.

Atmospheric thriller that gives Turhan Bey a rare leading role as a smooth and oily spiritualist out to scam grieving young widow Lynn Bari. The plot is improbable but entertaining, and it takes some unexpected twists before reaching its satisfying conclusion.

The film is a masterpiece. The script is excellent, the actors are excellent, and the director made the writer's words come to life.

Certainly not an 'amazing' film, but enjoyable none the less. I would almost call it a skeptic movie since it pulls back the curtain on the tricks of a self-proclaimed spiritualist.

Brilliant first scene :a woman is watching the sea on her balcony then behind the curtain, the shadow of a hand holding something which looks like a revolver much to the audience's surprise ,it's a simple brush! The movie is very good at creating unsettling atmospheres: the menacing picture which seems to mesmerize you, this piano tune the late husband used to play ,the meeting on the beach where the widow ,who has never got over her love's decease, encounters a mysterious fascinating man ,who seems to know a lot of things about her even harmless birds can be menacing the nightmarish terror of the woman in her bedroom and the sister's (sweet cute girl-next-door Cathy O' Donnell) common sense, who tries to explains everything.

I found this movie on a streaming service and started watching with zero expectations. I even missed in the credits that John Alton was the cinematographer.

A widow hears her late husband's voice coming from the coast off her mansion and later bumps into an enchanting man, Alexis (Mr. X, I presume?

This is a delicious little House-On-The-Cliff-By-The Seething Sea" "B" movie, an immersion in style and spiritualist hocus-pocus, starring Lynn Bari, who usually played hard-bitten criminal types, and Turhan Bey, a 40's leading man almost forgotten, since many of the films he was in (with folks like Maria Montez) haven't been released on DVD. Bey usually played exotic types in flashy costumes, and here is no exception--he even has a cackling pet raven to follow him around with avian commentary on the shifty doings in the neighborhood.
