The American Astronaut

There are set categories of science fiction aesthetics, such as the various -punks (Cyber, Steam, et al), but in The American Astronaut a unique aesthetic was brilliantly conceived by a working class filter. Creator Cory McAbee's guideline was a world where everything could be "repaired with a hammer", and from there his Astro-Roughneck universe surrounds a simple story with a style all its own.

Pretty much from start to finish, this movie made me wildly uncomfortable.Half of this movie is annoying, plotless nonsense, and the other half is purposeless awkward pauses.

This is a triumph of so many genres and ideas. I felt the black and white style was pretentious at first, but this movie just destroyed my prejudices one after another.

"Eraserhead" meets "Dark Star" meets Jarmusch meets alternative rock. And that doesn't even begin to describe this utterly original little flick.

My favorite musical. So strange, so rock n roll, so wonderful.

It's hard to describe this movie even with spoilers, let alone without. It's weird like Lynch did it, and reminds me of Jarmusch too.

One of the best quirky indie original off-the-wall comedies to see over and over again. I've seen some indie original stuff and The American Astronaut delivers with unexpected results.

After a series of ridiculously amusing shorts, Cory Mcabee made this amazing movie. Not the best film ever made by any means but my personal and eternal favorite.
