...to the point where it might be a stretch to actually call it a "heist movie.

The Old Man And The GunSlow and gentle biopic about a serial thief who hooks up with an older woman for an adventure. It doesn't set the world alight as it wasn't intended to do so but it has an interesting story worth a watch.

Initially discouraged by the lacklustre 6.7 user rating here on IMDb, I - being an admirer of Robert Redford's career - decided to give this film a watch anyways and this is quite simply just a really nice film.

Career criminal Forrest Tucker (Robert Redford) escapes from San Quentin at the ripe old age of 70 and with the assistance of a couple of his friends he goes on a bank robbing spree all over the USA. Hot on Forrest's heels is police officer John Hunt (Casey Affleck) who leads the exhaustive hunt to try to track down Forrest and his pals who have been dubbed as the 'over-the-hill gang' but despite their advancing age the 3 men are highly professional, elusive and difficult to catch...

And as long as Robert Redford is alive and healthy, life is not so bad.

This movie has some genuine inspiration and is certainly classy but it feels way too much like an overly indulgent farewell to Robert Redford. That tends to get in the way of a rather interesting narrative.

Very slow, very calm, no special highlights. If you watch this film, then mainly because of Robert Redford and the fantastic Casey Affleck.

It starts out quietly, and slowly, so you wait to see if it gets more interesting, but it doesn't. you don't walk away with much insight or any emotion.

Watching The Old man & The Gun is a like Bullit was shot in 2018. Just gripping, masterfully directed by Lowery and with a spectacular Robert Redford who never misses a shot.
