The Pianist

The infamous Sports Palace speech by 'Josef Goebbels' (qv) (18th February 1943) is heard on the radio in 1939.

When 'Wladyslaw Szpilman' (qv) is told he has to leave the first apartment he's hiding in, his hair is parted and hanging down either side of his face.

In the next shot, when he sits down to try to smoke the cigarette, his hair is combed back with no part visible.

When 'Wladyslaw Szpilman' (qv) is forced to leave his first hiding place after breaking the dishes, he has significant stubble on his face.

However, when he reached Dorota's apartment in the next scene, he's clean shaven.

When 'Wladyslaw Szpilman' (qv) crawls past the woman who was shot in the back and died kneeling in front of the hospital (before she reached the staircase), she has moved forward visibly (and is now in front of the stairs).

When 'Wladyslaw Szpilman' (qv) is playing in the closing scenes, the piano's logo "Steinway & Sons" is the modernized style that came into use in the 1990s.

When 'Wladyslaw Szpilman' (qv) is crossing the bridge, the same extra (wearing the glasses) passes him twice, in the space of two shots.

The tin of gherkins 'Wladyslaw Szpilman' (qv) finds in the destroyed house changes size between shots.

When 'Wladyslaw Szpilman' (qv)'s father is slapped by the German officer, the officer is obviously wearing gloves which should not have made a sharp sound.

The bayonet used by the German sergeant to open the sack of beans is not German issue.

It appears to be a Turkish Model 1890 bayonet.

However, in war it is common to use a weapon stolen or bought from another country.

There is a scene in which 'Wladyslaw Szpilman' (qv) is walking in formation along the street with a group of Jewish workmen.

A German officer selects various men and then executes them one by one by shooting them in the head.

As the last man is shot.

The hollow sound of a spent shell casing striking the ground is heard.

Instead of an empty shell, a complete cartridge with the bullet is shown falling to the ground.

- PLOTWhen 'Wladyslaw Szpilman' (qv) goes to his friend of last resort for help it is deep winter in Poland with snow.

On the table in his friends flat is a bunch of fresh yellow roses.

How do you get roses in mid-winter wartime Poland? Also, the following morning the roses have mysteriously changed to apricot-colored roses.

After the local hospital by Szpilman's hideout bursts into flames, we see a shot of a German holding two Polish resistance fighters at gunpoint.

When the two escape, the German fires his rifle and the sound of a shotgun being pumped is used.

The rifle being used by the German, the Karibiner 98k, is bolt-action.

When Germans go in a parade after capturing Warsaw they go through Nowy Swiat street.

Before the war and during it the street was not only for cars but also for trams.

As this scene was filmed in original location, there are no tram rails on the street, but they should have been in 1939.
