In the opening sequence, Vance Shaw escapes a posse by riding through a herd of grazing wild buffalo.

But in close-ups of the beasts, cowboys herding them can be seen in the background, despite no such cowhands in the establishing long shots of the herd.

When Creighton leaves on the stage after his accident, his left ankle is bandaged and he is favoring his left foot.

When we later see him walk with a cane, he is favoring his right foot.

In the gunfight at the barbershop, Shaw first fires shots with his right gun, throws it away and then uses his left gun.

He then fires at least nine shots with this gun without reloading it before the end of the gunfight.

During the speeches before they start stringing the telegraph wires, all the flags are 48-star flags.

There were only 35 states in the Union in 1861.

Bank robber Vance Shaw (Randolph Scott) is being pursued by a posse. He rescues injured Western Union engineer Edward Creighton (Dean Jagger) and he loses the posse.

I have seen the year listed as 1941 here. Today I watched the movie and the listing stated 1948.

A spectacular and mighty adventure during the Civil War when America's destiny rode in the saddle bags of adventurers and hard-working laborers installing the poles and cable . The ¨Western Union¨ feats were similarly developed to ¨Pony Express¨ that was a mail service delivering messages , newspapers , mail , and small packages from St.

"Western Union" as one might expect, is about the building of the Western Union telegraph line to the west. It takes place in 1861 at the out break of the American Civil War.

The second of Fritz Lang's three westerns (after "The Return of Frank James" and before "Rancho Notorious").This is one of those "company" westerns, showing history being made, or at least some version of history, as some big company struggled to connect the East and the West, this time by telegraph.

As the Civil War breaks out in 1861, a former outlaw (Randolph Scott) joins the team wiring what is now Nebraska and Wyoming for telegraph service. Dean Jagger plays the executive of the project while Robert Young is on hand as a "tenderfoot" from back East.

Admittedly, you do have to get past some historical inaccuracies. But then again, this isn't a documentary.

Western Union is directed by Fritz Lang and written by Robert Carson who adapts from the Zane Grey novel of the same name. It stars Robert Young, Randolph Scott, Dean Jagger, Barton MacLane and Virginia Gilmore.
