I must admit to being a bit of a fan of the work of Guillermo del Toro, and so, in an effort to see more of his work I'm looking at a couple of his earlier films. We have this one today and later 'The Devil's Backbone' will be viewed and reviewed in, what I'm calling my mini 'del Toro Fest'.

Guillermo del Toro's feature film debut is a dark, fascinating & beautifully macabre horror fantasy that creates its own rich mythology from scratch and translates it on screen with deft care & surprising elegance. Though a bit uneven at times, Cronos still makes for an interesting sit, thanks to the director's patient approach & sincere performances from its committed cast.

In 1535, an alchemist builds the cronos device, which allows for extended lifetimes. Four hundred years later, the alchemist is killed.

In 1535, an alchemist (Mario Iván Martínez) builds an extraordinary mechanism encapsulated into a small golden device. The invention grants eternal life, but has one small caveat.

An antique store owner finds a mysterious device inside a statue base which when used is designed to provide its owner with eternal life.I give the writer props for the different take on the vampire sub-genre.

Cronos is the first feature length film by Guillermo del Toro. I checked it out as part of the Criterion collection available on Hulu for instant viewing.

This movie had a lot of good things going for it. First it had a great cast.

Sorry, dreadful! Very poorly acted and cannot understand some of the 'rave' reviews.

Antiques dealer Jesus Gris (Federico Luppi) buys an interesting angel statue. After some cockroaches climb out, he takes it apart and find a golden device.
